Tunnel Vision! A Sneak Peek… Ssh!

A ‘Tunnel Vision’ surprise is about to unfold in downtown Westport.

Thursday, May 22 5:30-8:30pm

The Westport Downtown Merchants Association will soon prove their broad peripheral vision with the unveiling of their latest venture...this long anticipated ‘tunnel surprise’ will be unveiled at this year’s annual WDMA’s Art About Town Night Street Party.

The WDMA, in collaboration with Win Properties, have been working together throughout the year in an attempt to bring new life to the pedestrian passageway (tunnel) between Parker Harding Plaza and Main Street. The duo came up with an idea and a concept which they are in the process of turning into a reality, as they share the costs associated with this project; the clean-up, prepping of walls, painting and lighting.

The 80 foot long, 8 foot high and 8 foot wide tunnel has deteriorated into somewhat of an eyesore since the current artwork on its walls was created in 1994 - 20 years ago.

The WDMA and Win Properties have commissioned local artist Miggs Burroughs to create a permanent, original work of contemporary art.

Miggs Burroughs
, a life-long Westport resident and full time Graphic Artist, has had the honor of creating this new vision, bestowed upon him. Burroughs will be creating this spectacular new display with his use of the ‘Lenticular’ medium. The creation will be comprised of a series of eight 32” square installations, on each side of the tunnel. Each will be built into the wall itself and the artwork will be illuminated by back lighting.

“The tunnel creates a great metaphor,” said Burroughs. “We want the tunnel to be a destination on its own, not just a through way, so anyone walking through will experience something on a human scale – not just pretty pictures. The intent is to give them a rewarding emotional journey as well.”

“Win Properties is absolutely thrilled to be a part of this historic and iconic art installation,” said Rick Yarmy, Director of Property Management for Win. “We look forward to the people of Westport and those visiting Westport, enjoying this unique art experience for many years to come.”

“Tunnel Vision is one of the most ambitious and challenging art projects I have ever been involved in. It is an honor and a privilege to be asked to transform this unique Westport space from a practical passage way into a highly immersible and meaningful experience for tunnel-goers of all ages and persuasions,” said Burroughs.

Not to be missed! Drum roll please….
