Shiny Toys: A Guru’s Advice

Winter 2012-2013 has proved a brutal season, and not only for our heating bills. The salt, sand, and whatever else is in the de-icing mix on the roads of Westport has probably wreaked havoc with the mirror finish of your car. Given that we’ve got an incredible local expert—Chris Larson of BMW of Bridgeport has been listed in the Top 20 Car Detailers in the world in the du Pont Registry—we asked him for some advice for putting the shine back on our favorite toys.

To start with, keep your car clean.

“Wash it regularly,” says Chris. “We’ve noticed in recent years that whatever is going on the roads to melt snow and ice has a corrosive effect on ours cars.” He notes that the act of brushing snow and ice off a dirty car will cause any accumulated dirt to act like an abrasive, and scratch the finish, so regular washing is job one.

Larson, who as Detail Manager supervises a crew of six at his BMW of Bridgeport shop, has clients come to him from all over the globe. He’s currently got a 1926 Rolls sailing in his direction via containership from Europe for his premium service. He offers more tips that you can follow in your own garage to mitigate winter’s damage:

For your tool kit, Larson advises you to get a wash bucket, and a car washing wax liquid.

“Use a wash mitt on the finish,” he advises, “and use a microfiber drying towel, which you can get anywhere online. Don’t use a chamois cloth—they will scratch.”

Larson says he’s sometimes shocked at the cleaners and tools people use on their cars.

“Do not use kerosene, or gasoline as cleaners.” Chris grimaces at the thought. “And no scrubby sponges—they are for pots and pans, not cars.” Larson recommends Esotericcarcare.com for top quality products.

The detail guru also advises cleaning wheels with a cleaner designated for that purpose. With rims—which catch lots of dust—he recommends some spray and a toothbrush.

If your car has passed the point of just needing a good cleaning and, as spring approaches, is in need of some TLC, contact Chris and his team.
