Viv's Veggies

Local organic vegetables grown with love

You can't find produce much fresher than at Viv's Veggies in Weston. The shaded tables proudly displaying the current crops sit adjacent to the farm and greenhouse where the goodies are grown. But make sure to mark your calendar--the stand is only open a few days a week from noon to five. Why not earlier? "We pick what's ready in the morning," owner Vivian Simons explains. "So what you buy is only a few hours old."

Vivian bought the property on Chestnut Farm last February and opened the stand July 2013. She has recently expanded adding several new varieties of vegetables. In the spring you will find greens and peas, mid-summer tomatoes, zucchini, and eggplant, and squash in the fall, but the real treasures here are the less common crops. "I like to grow what's not in the supermarket," Viv says. Like the pineapple ground cherries, part of the tomatillo family, and new to the mix this year. "I am the most excited about these. You can eat them raw--they are delicious and delicate." These beauties will be ready the end of July.

Viv likes to have the customers try before they buy. The day I visited Viv gave me a sample of a lettuce that tastes like wasabi. The other offerings were varieties of greens, beets, white and orange carrots, and scapes--part of the garlic family but look more like an oversized scallion, highly prized by restaurant chefs.

"We try to make this a fun place," Viv says as she arranges a mannequin head among the baskets of produce, adding the right amount of whimsy. When families come she accompanies the kids in the fields so they can pick their own. And she says the greenhouse is something to see as the summer progresses--the tomato and cucumber vines grow straight to the ceiling. They are also hosting the Harvest Hoedown in October, presented by the Weston Booster Club--a celebration with dinner, dancing, and games featuring cuisine from top local restaurants and chefs.
