Calling all Jr. Farmers & Farm Apprentices! Wakeman Town Farm is gearing up for another down & dirty spring/summer season, with a range of hands-on programming for kids of all ages! The farm team, including Staples Enviormental Studies teacher and Farm Steward Mike Aitkenhead, have planned age-appropriate programs for kids in K-5, middle school and high school. The groups will learn about sustainable farming through planning, planting and caring for an organic garden, feeding and caring for animals, and understanding the science behind raising a successful garden using both modern and time-honored technologies. Younger kids will delight in games, crafts, and food preparation using veggies straight from the gardens and older kids (apprentices) will get their hands dirty working on more challenging independent projects, which incorporate building, science and environmental studies, as well as the joys of spending time outdoors with other teens while being "unplugged".
Registration for Spring Programs and Summer Camps opens on Monday, March 10 via the Parks & Recreation website http://www.westportct.gov/index.aspx?page=694 or at http://www.wakemantownfarm.org/Youth-Programs.html. Space is limited. Questions? Call (203) 557-9195. Dates and times vary by age group.
